On Existence Revised on 10/02/2023 “The Mystery of Existence” was published in 2013 by Wiley-Blackwell.
As a child growing up in Blackpool between 1938 and 1958 the thoughts of my existence probably did not exist. I did think about God however so I should start there. I became a born again Christian in about 1955. I do not recall when and where but in that time frame I was an adherent to the form of Christianity espoused by the protestan church I attended close to my home, that is St Thomas’s Church on the corner of Caunce St and Devonshire Rd in Blackpool.
For about eight years I went to that Church three times on Sunday. For morning service, afternoon Sunday school and then evening service. Then there was Friday evenings when I played table Tennis and Badminton with friends in the church hall.
Some time in the late 50’s, I think, my beliefs were given a shock. I had been absent from the School one Sunday and the following week my friends proudly announced they had decided that people who were not Christian could not fall in love. I did not swear in those days but today if someone said that to me I would use a profanity to describe their stupidity.
My beliefs in Christ as a god started to evaporate over many years even though in 1965 I married a Catholic girl and promised her our children would be Catholic.
I always retained however the ideas that “Thou Shalt not Kill” and Jesus’ refrain “Love thy Neighbor as Thyself” Those ideas are fundamental to my thoughts about the future of the Human race. They are necessary conditions.
In “The Mystery of Existence” you will see questions like Why not Absolute Nothingness? Why ask Why?Nothing takes place without sufficient reason. How come the Quantum, how come the Universe, how come Existence? Why does the universe bother to exist. If you believe god is the creator, why does god bother? But isn’t a blank AbsurdORNo explanation is needed! Somewhere in there you will see thoughts and reasons for the BIG BANG. You might even see multiple Universes. We don't understand this one and we are talking, or at least a few are talking, about all the other existences.
Where does the idea that “Thou shalt not kill” come from if not from god and since I no longer believe in god, what next? Is there an inherent condition of the human mind that invades our thought process? What about the ideas that have led groups of peoples, call them Nations if you will, to conquer other peoples, claim their lands, make them servants. Isn't "make them servants" inherant in our economic systems. Don't we need people at the bottom to serve our needs, like make widgets, and then increase our wealth, like sell our widgets at a profit ? This can be confusing I find that my beliefs are akin to the Humanist Philosophy part of which is Thou shalt not kill!Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
What comes next is the survival of the human race on this earth and the continued study of science in an effort to achieve understanding. Actually before both of these, America, the USA that is, needs to acknowledge that it has a flawed understanding of the ethical principles of Christianity.
Continued Existence will be incredibly difficult.
